What is coeliac disease?Coeliac disease is a disorder caused by an intolerance to gluten (a protein belonging to a class called prolamines) which is found in wheat, barley, rye and possibly oats. Often this disease is misdiagnosed as “irritable bowel Syndrome” as the symptoms can be very similar (diarrhea, bloating and nausea being the most common). Therefore it is important to be correctly diagnosed by a practitioner. Other symptoms may include eczema, weight loss, anaemia and pains in the bones/joints.Continuing to eat food containing gluten for sufferers of the disease eventually causes damage to the lining of the small intestine (villi) where our food is broken down, resulting in malabsorption of nutrients, with further nutrients being lost as a result of the diarrhea. The stools are often “fatty” in appearance (indicating lack of absorption of fat soluble vitamins) which has often led to patients being put on a low fat diet if they haven’t been diagnosed correctly. A low fat diet is not suitable as the food leaves the stomach too rapidly leaving the walls of the stomach exposed to strong hydrochloric acid for long periods and a lack of essential nutrients for optimum health. There is continuing research being done as to the causes of the disease along with possible links to other conditions such as multiple sclerosis, schizophrenia, dermatitis hepetiformis and regional enteritis (a disease of the bowel). It is not usually considered to be a hereditary disease although there appears to be an inherited predisposition with nutritional factors before and after birth in both mother and child perhaps creating an environment for the disease. It is vital for a person diagnosed with coeliac disease to adhere strictly to a gluten free diet to remain free of the symptoms and avoid losing essential vitamins and minerals creating other health problems.
